The 12 Days of Christmas Traditions

Day 6: Give Back!

Giving and receiving gifts is one of the most celebrated aspects of the Christmas season. Kids spend time making their Christmas wish lists. You may even take them to visit Santa to share their lists and have their picture taken. I love to give gifts to my girls. The excitement on their faces and the anticipation of Christmas morning is one of the best parts of Christmas. But if we aren’t intentional, this focus can create the unintended consequence of selfishness and greed.

A great way to find a healthy balance for your family is found in today’s Christmas Tradition. Give back! During this season, look for opportunities to serve and give back with your family.

Here are some examples:

  • Pack Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse.

  • Serve a meal in the local soup kitchen with your family.

  • Visit a local nursing home and sing carols or deliver some cookies to those who live there.

  • Ring the bell for the Salvation Army.

  • Ask your church for a list of “shut in” members and visit them.

Get creative. There are so many opportunities, and I assure you these experiences will create a much greater impact on the lives of your children than any material gift you could give them.

What motivates our giving during this season? Always remember the true meaning of Christmas is not found in the gifts under the tree, but in the celebration that God has given us the greatest gift by sending Jesus to be born into the world as our Savior. We give because so much has been given to us!
