Ok…I get it. The idea of shopping during the Christmas season doesn’t sound like a tradition, it sounds like a nightmare. But hear me out on this one. As a busy dad, your kids spell love, T-I-M-E, and taking them Christmas shopping provides a great opportunity to spend some time with them in an otherwise busy season. So why is this a good idea, and how can it be done in a way that doesn’t subtract years from your life.

First, the why:

  1. One-on-one time with your kids is a great way to make memories.

  2. In a season largely driven by what your kids “get.” Taking them shopping to buy gifts for others offers a positive alternative.

  3. When Christmas rolls around, they’ll be so excited to give their gifts, it can potentially reshape what they love about the season.

Second, the how:

  1. Coordinate with your wife and determine the best day.

  2. Go to your child and share about the “top secret mission” of buying their sibling or mom a Christmas present.

  3. Ask for their input. “What do you want to get your sister?” This prevents you from wandering through the mall.

  4. Scout out the best place to purchase the gift before you leave the house. We men are killers, not hunters. Do the work before the trip so you can go immediately to the store, make the purchase, and get the heck out of there without losing your sanity.

  5. Take them out to eat or get some ice cream before or after shopping to make the day extra special.

  6. Get home, sneak the gift inside, let them wrap it, label it, and place it under the tree.

  7. Watch their excitement grow to give their gifts as Christmas draws near.

Guys, this is an easy one. I know shopping is not exactly a favorite pastime for men, but spending time with your kids should be. This is an easy way to do just that. Let me know your strategy for making this happen in your house this year. Comment below.
